Students and other guests visited the North-South partnership.
It was reading week when a team of nine flew from southern Ontario to two northern Ontario reservations called Summer Beaver and Sandy Lake. Summer Beaver, with a population of over 400, and Sandy Lake, with about 2,500 people, are both unique communities. Spending time in each place enabled participants to develop a unified understanding of their barriers and steps towards prevention and strategic partnership-planning.

Participants boarded a plane to visit Summer Beaver and Sandy Lake.
I wanted to share my view of my experience up north for a number of reasons but the most significant being the importance of storytelling in First Nations communities. In essence, I truly believe through genuine dialogue, issues such as solutions and next steps can be approached on a relational level; meaning being non-intrusive or demanding when working with indigenous communities or any minority groups in general.

Scenery at the reservations.
Over my six days up north, I have seen acts of leadership and activism through storytelling and youth mobilization from youth living in Summer Beaver and Sandy Lake. I believe it’s important to know that there are great advancements and strengths within these communities. As a humanitarian and youth worker I believe fostering pockets of growth for young people so they can continue to effectively mobilize their communities should be the main approach.

The view from the plane.
How grateful I am for being one of two students chosen in professor Judy Finlay’s child advocacy program to go on this journey. Almost a month later and the images, sounds, conversations— among many other elements— stay vivid in my mind. While I have the privilege to go home and reflect on my experience, First Nations people, including children and youth, are living it daily on the reserves! As a citizen of Canada who has now seen first-hand their living conditions, being an absentee in these communities is no longer an option.

An activity students participated in for the partnership.
